Lagos State Confirms Cholera Outbreak: Provides Statistics

The Lagos State Ministry of Health has via a press release, confirmed the outbreak of severe gastroenteritis caused by cholera, in Lagos. The Lagos State Commissioner of Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, revealed that 350 suspected cases of the cholera outbreak have been reported in 29 wards across the local government areas in Lagos. 17 of the 350 suspected cases of cholera outbreak have been confirmed, with 15 of the 17 having resulted in fatalities. The commissioner further disclosed that the pattern of the new cases discovered on daily basis, varies across local government areas.

Cholera is a bacterial/waterborne disease usually spread through contaminated water. In Nigeria, cholera spreads more during the rainy season as the disease itself is spread more in water. The classic symptom is large amounts of watery diarrhea that last a few days. Cholera continues to affect an estimated 3–5 million people worldwide and causes 28,800–130,000 deaths a year. Africa is currently considered an area with an ongoing risk of cholera disease.
