Immediate impact on living beings – Humans and animals rely on oxygen to survive. Without it, brain cells would begin dying within minutes, leading to unconsciousness and death shortly after. Most complex life forms would perish almost instantly.

Collapse of ecosystems – Plants also need oxygen for cellular respiration (even though they produce oxygen during photosynthesis). Without oxygen, plant cells would die, halting food production and destabilizing the entire food chain.
Fires and combustion stop – Oxygen fuels fire. Without it, no flames could burn, from wildfires to engines that rely on combustion, planes, cars, and even power plants would grind to a halt.
Atmospheric and structural effects – The atmosphere is about 21% oxygen. If that vanished, air pressure and density would change drastically, harming our ability to breathe even if nitrogen remained. Oxygen also binds with elements in rocks and metals, so without it, Earth’s crust and protective ozone layer (O₃) would destabilize. That means more cosmic radiation reaching the surface.
Oceans would collapse – Oxygen dissolved in water is vital for marine life. Without it, fish and other aquatic species would suffocate, causing mass extinctions.
