North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has arrived in Beijing for a high-profile military parade, marking one of his most significant international appearances since his summits with Donald Trump. The event, hosted by China to commemorate the end of World War Two, will see Kim positioned alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Analysts say the optics alone elevate Kim’s status, allowing him to present himself at home as a legitimate world statesman despite Pyongyang’s isolation.

The parade is attended by more than two dozen foreign leaders, but Kim’s placement at Xi’s side underscores North Korea’s symbolic alignment with China and Russia. Some observers have described the trio as an “Axis of Upheaval,” though South Korea’s intelligence service has downplayed the possibility of real trilateral cooperation emerging soon.
For Kim, the benefits are clear: strengthening ties with Beijing after focusing heavily on Russia, signaling resilience against sanctions, and demonstrating implicit backing for his nuclear arsenal. The visit also provides opportunities to network with other leaders, including those from nations with histories of arms trade with Pyongyang. Experts say Kim may leverage the trip to expand diplomatic contacts and explore discreet economic or military cooperation.
Kim’s presence at the Beijing parade carries both political symbolism and practical advantages. Ahead of his departure, he toured North Korea’s missile production facilities, highlighting the country’s nuclear capabilities. Observers note that by applauding China’s own advanced nuclear arsenal during the parade, Kim indirectly bolsters the legitimacy of North Korea’s weapons program.
The timing is significant. In 2023, Kim deepened ties with Russia, securing a mutual defense pact and sending troops and weapons to support Moscow’s war in Ukraine. His pivot toward Beijing now signals a rebalancing restoring relations with China while hedging against any potential cooling of Russian support if the conflict winds down. Analysts believe the visit also serves as a message to Washington: North Korea is not isolated, but backed by two of the world’s most powerful states.
For China, hosting Kim helps reinforce its image as a regional power broker, while Russia benefits from demonstrating unity against Western sanctions. Meanwhile, Kim stands to gain economic aid, political cover, and possible arms trade opportunities though any deals would need to be conducted discreetly given ongoing U.N. restrictions.
“This visit presents nothing but opportunities for Kim,” said Michael Madden of the Stimson Center. “It is a chance to boost his global profile and test the waters of multilateral diplomacy.”
