Xi shows Trump who holds the cards as he sets up meeting with Kim and Putin

China’s president Xi Jinping is preparing to host Russian leader Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un at a major military parade in Beijing. The event, set for 3 September, will mark 80 years since Japan’s surrender in World War Two, but the symbolism stretches far beyond history. Xi is using the occasion to demonstrate China’s influence on the global stage, showing that he has strong ties to leaders the West regards as isolated.

While President Trump has signalled his interest in meeting Kim again, and continues to push for progress with Putin on the war in Ukraine, Xi is already one step ahead. Having both Putin and Kim by his side highlights Beijing’s leverage.

For Xi, this is a chance to position China not only as an economic powerhouse but also as a key diplomatic player. The gathering underscores Beijing’s importance in global affairs, especially at a time when Trump faces challenges in building momentum on both North Korea and Ukraine.

Kim Jong Un’s presence in Beijing is especially significant. It is his first time attending a Chinese military parade since 1959 and signals that relations with Beijing remain strong, despite his growing closeness with Putin.

North Korea relies heavily on China for food and trade, so the relationship is one Kim cannot afford to lose. Meanwhile, Russia’s war in Ukraine has brought Moscow and Pyongyang closer together, but China remains cautious, calling for peace while being accused of indirectly aiding Russia’s war effort.

For Xi, this new display of unity with Putin and Kim provides useful leverage ahead of expected talks with President Trump. Trade disputes, tariffs, and the future of Chinese-owned TikTok in the United States are all on the table.

If Xi can present himself as the leader who holds sway with both Putin and Kim, it could strengthen his negotiating hand. The possibility of a future meeting involving all four leaders Xi, Putin, Kim, and Trump remains uncertain but underlines the shifting balance of diplomatic power.
