A major crash involving eight vehicles four lorries and four cars has led to the complete closure of the M60 motorway in both directions. The incident occurred between Junction 27 (Portwood roundabout) and Junction 1 (Stockport Pyramid). Emergency services responded swiftly, and although the scene looked catastrophic, no serious injuries were reported those involved only sustained minor injuries. The collision triggered chaos, with traffic being held entirely in both directions. Drivers were stranded for hours, and the effects rippled across surrounding routes, worsening congestion. According to National Highways, the crash also caused significant infrastructure damage, including smashed barriers, lamp posts, and widespread fuel spillage. One of the lorries spilled its load of beer barrels, contributing further to the mess and extending clean-up operations. National Highways issued a statement acknowledging the complexity of the scene: “Multi-vehicle collision, infrastructure damage (barrier, lamp columns), fuel spillage and a shed load. Thankfully only minor injuries but substantial clean-up required.” Clean-up crews began efforts to clear debris and spilled goods, but due to the scale and nature of the wreckage, authorities warned that delays would last for several hours. Motorists were advised to avoid the area entirely and find alternate routes while recovery work continued.
The crash sparked strong public reaction on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter), where many users criticized driving behavior on the M60 and called for greater accountability. One user posted: “People who drive on the M60 need to be held accountable to how they drive it. I'm on that road most days and people drive too close, speed, weave in and out. Everyday I see a near collision. What are the police doing about it? Nothing at all.” Another suggested that new laws should be introduced to tackle reckless driving and even called for mandatory retesting of drivers who cause such chaos: “About time a law was introduced for idiots who cause chaos like this. Retests.” Many users described the M60 as a “nightmare route” during peak times, citing a lack of enforcement, poor lane discipline, and aggressive driving habits. Despite the minor injuries in this particular incident, many believe it serves as a wake-up call to address dangerous driving culture on the motorway before a more tragic event occurs. There have also been renewed calls for increased police presence, use of dashcam footage for enforcement, and public safety campaigns reminding drivers about proper motorway etiquette and the dangers of tailgating and lane weaving. Authorities have yet to announce any specific changes but are expected to review the circumstances surrounding this multi-vehicle collision.
