BRICS is making waves in Nigeria and globally because Donald Trump announced a 10% tariff on Nigeria and other nations aligning with the bloc, calling BRICS “anti-American.”
He made this known on Truth Social during the BRICS Summit in Brazil, where member states including Nigeria, criticised unilateral tariffs.

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to BRICS, backing its push for global financial reform and fairer international systems.
Nigeria joined BRICS as a partner country in January 2025 during the bloc’s 16th summit in Russia, alongside eight others like Malaysia and Uganda.
At the Rio summit, Tinubu, represented by Bayo Onanuga, said Nigeria stands with BRICS on economic equity and global restructuring.
The group jointly condemned rising protectionism, which many see as a direct response to Trump’s America-first trade stance.
