Morocco vs Nigeria: Everything you need to know about the WAFCON 2024 final

The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final is set for a massive showdown between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and hosts Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses. Taking place in Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Olympic Annex Stadium, the clash will kick off at 8PM WAT on Saturday, July 26.

This final represents two different footballing journeys. Nigeria, nine-time champions and the most successful team in WAFCON history, are on a mission to win a record-extending 10th title. Morocco, meanwhile, have never lifted the trophy and will be banking on home support to make history.

Nigeria advanced to the final after beating reigning champions South Africa 2-1 in a tight semi-final. Morocco had to dig deep, edging Ghana in a tense penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes.

This match also carries emotional weight for Nigeria. In the previous edition, they were knocked out by Morocco on penalties in the semi-finals – in the same stadium hosting Saturday’s final.

Fans can watch the game on SuperSport and AfroSport. Referee Antsino Twanyanyukwa from Namibia will officiate, with VAR support led by Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga.

The final will take place in a state-of-the-art 21,000-capacity stadium, part of Morocco’s major football infrastructure push ahead of AFCON 2025 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Falcons squad features a strong mix of experience and youth. Key players include captain Rasheedat Ajibade, prolific striker Asisat Oshoala, and midfielders Jennifer Echegini and Halimatu Ayinde. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has also been vital in Nigeria’s unbeaten run.

Morocco's squad boasts talents like Ghizlane Chebbak, Rosella Ayane, and Ibtissam Jraidi. The Atlas Lionesses are determined to deliver in front of their home fans and rewrite history.

Speaking ahead of the final, Nigerian captain Ajibade emphasized the team's focus and determination. “We’re approaching this match with the same confidence that’s carried us through the tournament,” she said. “It will demand even more from us – mentally, physically, emotionally, and tactically. We must go beyond 100% to win.”

She also acknowledged the pressure of playing against the host nation but affirmed that the Super Falcons are ready to give their all.

This final could mark a shift in African women’s football. A Moroccan win would make them only the fourth country ever to win WAFCON, following Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and South Africa.

Regardless of the outcome, the 2024 WAFCON has already showcased the rising quality of the women’s game across the continent. With passionate fans, improved infrastructure, and elite competition, Saturday’s final promises to be a memorable conclusion to a historic tournament.

Kickoff is at 8PM WAT. All eyes now turn to Rabat. Will Nigeria reinforce their legacy, or will Morocco rise to new heights in front of their home fans?
