(In Kenya) Kikuyu Residents Launch Rare Recall Bid Against MP Kimani Ichung’wah Over Alleged Neglect

Kimani Ichung’wah, the MP for Kikuyu Constituency and Kenya’s National Assembly Majority Leader, is facing a potential recall as frustrated constituents initiate a rare process to remove him from office.

Citing arrogance, disconnection from grassroots issues, and a failure to prioritize local development, the petitioners have invoked Article 104 of the Kenyan Constitution which allows voters to recall a non-performing legislator.

The residents accuse Ichung’wah of prioritizing party loyalty over the needs of the people who elected him. Despite holding one of the most influential parliamentary positions, critics say his leadership has become increasingly distant and unresponsive.

To succeed, the recall effort must clear several significant legal and procedural hurdles. The process requires a ruling from the High Court, followed by the collection of valid signatures from at least 30% of registered voters in the constituency. These signatures must then be verified by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), before a recall referendum can be held.

While this is not the first time voters have attempted to recall an MP, no such effort has ever been successful in Kenya’s history. Nonetheless, the move signals rising public dissatisfaction and a growing demand for accountability from elected leaders.
