Kenyan President Youngest Son George Ruto’s KES 14M Luxury Matatu ‘Mood’ Damaged After Chaotic Nairobi Launch, Sparks Debate

On July 21, 2025, at 12:28 PM WAT, George Kimutai Ruto, the youngest son of Kenyan President William Ruto, found himself at the center of national attention following the dramatic unveiling of his KES 14 million luxury matatu, dubbed Mood, in Nairobi. The 25-seater vehicle, celebrated for its cutting-edge features like solar panels, a live DJ booth, a 65-inch TV screen, and plush bucket seats, was intended to redefine Kenya’s vibrant matatu culture.

However, the glitzy launch at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on July 18 turned chaotic, resulting in minor cosmetic damage to the vehicle’s exterior. Just days after hitting Nairobi’s streets, Mood was returned to a garage for urgent repairs, as confirmed by a social media post from the Raptor Family, George’s matatu brand, stating, “Mood is currently out for touch-ups. We will be back shortly.”

The launch, which drew thousands of Gen Z enthusiasts, caused significant traffic disruptions in Nairobi’s CBD, with crowds accompanying the matatu in a celebratory convoy. While some praised George’s innovative blend of luxury, entertainment, and eco-conscious design—highlighted by solar panels powering the onboard systems—others criticized the event’s chaos, accusing it of fostering impunity.

Viral videos showed fans challenging police attempts to manage the crowd, fueling claims of privilege tied to George’s status as the president’s son. The incident has sparked a polarized debate, with supporters lauding Mood as a bold step toward modernizing Kenya’s transport culture, while detractors view it as a symbol of excess amid economic challenges. As Mood undergoes repairs, it remains a lightning rod for discussions about youth culture, innovation, and the influence of political lineage in Kenya.
