Ex-Man United Star Javier Hernandez Fined Over Sexist Comments

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, the former Manchester United striker and Mexico's all-time top scorer, has landed in hot water after making sexist comments on TikTok. Now 37 and playing for Liga MX club Chivas, Hernandez posted remarks that have been widely condemned across Mexico and beyond. In his video, he claimed that women are “failing” society and accused them of “eradicating masculinity.” He also encouraged women to “allow themselves to be led by a man.” The comments quickly drew backlash on social media and from prominent figures. President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's first female head of state, responded firmly by saying that while Hernandez is a great footballer, “he still has a lot to learn” when it comes to women’s rights and gender roles. The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) described his statements as promoting sexist stereotypes and said they constituted media violence. The FMF, along with the country’s top men’s and women’s leagues, issued a joint statement confirming an investigation had been launched. The Gender and Diversity Commission will handle the case and warned that any repeat of such behavior would lead to stricter consequences. Hernandez has not publicly apologized yet, and his words remain under scrutiny as the controversy unfolds.

Following the controversial remarks, Chivas, Hernandez’s current club, distanced themselves from his views. In an official statement, the club called his comments contrary to their values and added that “appropriate action” had been taken against him, although they did not disclose any specific details. The FMF has also fined him and issued a formal warning regarding his future behavior. The incident has triggered larger discussions in Mexico about sexism in sport, especially given Hernandez's status as a role model. The joint statement from FMF and league officials stressed that they aim to prevent and punish such behavior in professional football. They also made it clear that repeat violations would be met with harsher penalties. Hernandez has had a long and successful football career. He joined Manchester United from Chivas in 2010, winning two Premier League titles. He also played for Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, and Sevilla, before spending four years in the U.S. with LA Galaxy. In 2023, he returned to Chivas on a two-year contract. Despite his achievements on the pitch, his recent comments have cast a shadow over his legacy and could affect his standing with fans and sponsors.
