Chelsea Face Setback as Ajax Increase Price for Jorrel Hato

Chelsea’s pursuit of Ajax’s 19-year-old defensive talent Jorrel Hato has encountered a major hurdle. While initial discussions between the two clubs suggested a fee of around €40 million, Ajax have now raised their valuation to €60 million. This sudden increase is causing concern at Stamford Bridge, where the club believed they had made strong progress in securing the young Dutch defender.

Although reports claimed Chelsea and Hato had agreed on personal terms, it appears those details are not fully finalised. Contract talks are still ongoing, and Ajax’s firm stance on a higher transfer fee may now slow down negotiations. Hato is seen as a key target for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, particularly because of his ability to play both as a centre-back and on the left side of defence.

Other top Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Liverpool had previously shown interest in the player, but Chelsea have remained the most aggressive in pursuing him. However, the new asking price could open the door for those clubs to re-enter the conversation.

Jorrel Hato is understood to be open to the move and has reportedly told Ajax he wants to join Chelsea. This puts Chelsea in a strong negotiating position, as the player’s preference is clear. His agent has also confirmed that discussions are still active, though Ajax are being firm due to the high potential of their young star.

The Dutch side is under no immediate pressure to sell, especially since Hato is under contract and remains one of their most valuable assets. However, with the new season fast approaching, Chelsea will need to make a decision quickly either meet the €60 million asking price or risk losing out to rivals who may jump back into the race.

For now, Chelsea remain hopeful, but the deal is far from done. The next few days will be crucial in determining whether Hato becomes a Blue or stays in Amsterdam a while longer.
