The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has become the focus of national debate as alumni and stakeholders voice strong opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to rename the institution after the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Concerned UNIMAID Alumni Association and Friends of UNIMAID argue that the university, established in 1975, stands as a symbol of resilience, academic excellence, and hope in Nigeria’s Northeast. They insist that honouring Buhari should not come at the cost of UNIMAID’s historic identity and legacy.

Instead, they propose alternative ways to immortalise Buhari—such as establishing new institutions or national monuments in his name.
