41-year-old UNIMED Registrar assassinated 6 months after appointment

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the assassination of Mr. Ezekiel Adeniran, the Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State. Adeniran, aged 41, was found lifeless in his Akure residence in the early hours of Thursday, just six months after being appointed to the role in January 2025.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the case is being treated as a targeted killing. “From the information I have at my disposal, two men came out of the bush and they forced a substance into another person’s mouth,” he said, though he did not specify if this directly involved Adeniran. He added that investigators are focused on uncovering the truth behind the crime and bringing those responsible to justice.

The police are urging members of the public to come forward with any useful information, promising that all tips will be treated with confidentiality. As investigations continue, no suspects have been identified, and the motive for the killing remains unclear.

The tragic death of Mr. Ezekiel Adeniran has thrown the University of Medical Sciences into mourning. The institution confirmed the news in a statement released by its Head of Media and Protocol, Mr. Isaac Oluyi. According to the statement, Adeniran was seen at his duty post just days before his death, on Monday, July 14, 2025.

Oluyi described the news as shocking and devastating to the university community. “The devastating news has thrown the university into mourning, as it was shocking,” the statement read. “As at the time of writing this statement, the cause of his death is yet to be ascertained.”

Though police have labelled the case as assassination, the university awaits a formal conclusion on the circumstances surrounding his death.

Adeniran’s sudden death raises serious concerns about security in the area and for high-ranking officials. His appointment as registrar was relatively recent, and no public threats were known before his death. His colleagues, friends, and the larger academic community have expressed grief and disbelief over the loss.

The Ondo State police remain committed to solving the case. The university has not yet announced funeral arrangements, but it is expected that further tributes and calls for justice will continue in the coming days.
