A spectator died during Portugal's Nations League final win over Spain at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Sunday, UEFA said on Monday.


During the first period of extra time, a spectator fell from the second tier of the main stand, reportedly landing in the media area or seating below. Stadium staff and paramedics provided immediate medical attention, but the individual could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at 00:06 CET. UEFA issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to the fan’s family and friends. The Bavarian Police classified the incident as an accident, stating there was no evidence to suggest otherwise. 


The match, which ended in a 2-2 draw after regular time, proceeded to a penalty shootout, with Portugal emerging victorious 5-3, claiming the Nations League title. Post-match, Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed his sadness, noting the tragedy overshadowed the game’s outcome. Portugal’s Nuno Mendes also shared condolences, emphasizing the loss put football into perspective.
