Kenya's Police Force Under Fire for Handling of Blogger's Custody Death

 

Sergeant Wesley Kipkorir Kirui is facing scrutiny after being named among the police officers involved in the arrest of Albert Ojwang, a blogger and teacher who tragically died in custody on June 8, 2025.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) disclosed the officers’ names to the Senate amid mounting public outcry, with calls for accountability intensifying following allegations of torture and CCTV tampering at the police station.

Ojwang’s autopsy revealed signs of blunt force trauma, bruising, and neck compression, challenging police claims of suicide. 

The tampered CCTV footage has further escalated demands for justice. Public outrage has grown on social media, with activists, lawmakers, and citizens urging immediate prosecution of those responsible. 

IPOA has launched a formal investigation, and Parliament is closely monitoring the case, signalling potential reforms in how police misconduct is addressed in Kenya.
