Kenya Police Protests: Activists Demand DIG Lagat's Resignation Over Misconduct

Kenyan police oversight is under scrutiny as protests demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Kipkoech Lagat, have gained momentum. Demonstrators gathered outside Vigilance House in Nairobi, voicing their concerns about Lagat's leadership.

Activists held him personally responsible in connection with the arrest and subsequent death of Albert Ojwang in police custody.  The crowd accused him of abusing his authority, especially after filing the defamation complaint against Ojwang, and demanded he step down for better institutional accountability.

The protest has reignited concern over police misconduct and leadership responsibility in Kenya.

Demonstrators, carrying placards and chanting outside the headquarters, argue that Lobat’s direct involvement and public role undermine public trust. Human rights groups and political figures, including former Deputy President Gachagua, have called for his suspension pending an independent inquiry.
