(In Nigeria) Peter Obi Slams Nigeria as “Lawless Country” After Demolition of Brother’s Property in Ikeja, Lagos

Ikeja, a bustling commercial hub in Lagos State, has sparked nationwide controversy in Nigeria after the demolition of a building owned by the younger brother of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate. On June 24, 2025, Obi shared a detailed post on X, condemning the Lagos State government for destroying his brother’s property without prior notice or legal documentation.

The building, registered to his brother’s company for over a decade, was razed in what Obi described as a “coordinated act of lawlessness.” He recounted how security personnel prevented his brother from accessing the site, citing a court judgment against “unknown persons and squatters,” yet no demolition permit or official explanation was provided. Obi, who traveled from Abuja to Lagos upon hearing the news, expressed dismay at the lack of transparency, noting that the government’s actions deter investors and undermine due process.

He framed the incident as part of a series of targeted attacks on his family since the 2023 presidential election, where Bola Tinubu was declared president-elect, a result Obi has contested. Labeling Nigeria a “lawless country,” he highlighted the broader implications of such impunity, arguing it stifles economic growth and erodes public trust. The demolition has ignited debates on governance and property rights, with many Nigerians on social media echoing Obi’s call for accountability and justice in the face of unchecked state power.
