Arthur Fils targeting Wimbledon return after back injury ends French Open campaign

Arthur Fils, the highest ranked French mens tennis player, withdrew from the 2025 French Open due to a stress fracture in his lower back, specifically the L5 vertebrae. The injury occurred during a demanding five set victory against Jaume Munar. Fils announced the news at a press conference on May 31, 2025, revealing that he will be sidelined for four to six weeks. This timeline casts doubt on his participation in Wimbledon, which begins on June 30, 2025. Fils, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2024, is listed to compete in the Libema Open and Halle Open as part of his grass court season, but his recovery may delay these plans.

The 20 year old expressed frustration at missing his home Grand Slam but emphasized the importance of prioritizing his long term health to avoid a more extended absence. Medical advice suggests rest and rehabilitation to ensure the injury heals properly, as a stress fracture in the spine can be serious if not managed carefully. Fils remains optimistic about returning to competitive play, with Wimbledon as his target, though he acknowledged the tight schedule.

The tennis community, including fans on X, has shown support, with many expressing concern for his recovery while recognizing his potential as a rising star. Fils, known for his dynamic playing style and recent climb in the ATP rankings, had been a strong contender at Roland Garros. His absence leaves a gap in the French mens field, and attention now turns to his rehabilitation progress. A successful recovery could see him back on the grass courts, aiming to build on his 2024 Wimbledon performance.
