England all-rounder Jamie Overton out of West Indies series with broken finger
England all-rounder Jamie Overton has been sidelined for the remainder of the One-Day International series and the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies due to a fractured right little finger. The 31-year-old suffered the injury during England’s victory in the first ODI at Edgbaston on May 29, 2025, while attempting to catch a sharp return from Keacy Carty in his second delivery. Initially thought to be a dislocation, scans confirmed a fracture, forcing Overton out of competitive action.
Despite the injury, Overton showed resilience, returning to the field with his finger strapped to deliver an impressive performance, claiming 3 wickets for 22 runs in 5.2 overs, dismissing Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, and Gudakesh Motie. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced that Overton will undergo rehabilitation under their medical team’s supervision, with recovery expected to take approximately one month. This timeline rules him out of the remaining ODIs on June 1 in Cardiff and June 3 at the Kia Oval, as well as the T20I series starting June 6 in Chester-le-Street.
The ECB confirmed no replacement will join the ODI squad, with reserve fast bowlers Matthew Potts and Luke Wood, alongside left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, available to step in. Overton’s absence is a blow to England, given his all-round capabilities, but the team remains confident in its depth. The focus now shifts to the second ODI, where England aims to build on their Edgbaston success. Overton’s injury underscores the physical demands of international cricket, and fans will hope for his swift recovery ahead of future engagements.
