Tamale Teaching Hospital has captured national attention following a dramatic power struggle between Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and the now-dismissed Chief Executive Officer, Dr Adam Atiku.
The tension escalated into a full-blown crisis when medical staff at the hospital launched a strike in protest of Dr Atiku’s removal, demanding not just his reinstatement but also urgent upgrades in medical equipment.
In a bid to address the hospital’s critical needs and defuse the growing unrest, the Health Minister has donated mobile ventilators and other essential life-saving equipment to the facility.
...This move is seen as an attempt to improve the quality of care at the hospital and to meet part of the striking doctors’ conditions for returning to work.
However, the situation remains tense. The health professionals have insisted that the equipment donation, while appreciated, does not resolve the core issue behind their protest.
They continue to call for a formal apology to Dr Atiku from the minister, a demand Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has outrightly rejected.
The minister maintains that Dr Atiku’s dismissal was justified, citing alleged gross mismanagement during his tenure.
The hospital, which serves as a critical healthcare hub in northern Ghana, has seen its services disrupted by the industrial action, raising concerns among residents and stakeholders about the stability of public health services in the region.
While the new equipment may bring a temporary improvement in the hospital’s operational capacity, the larger standoff between the government and health workers remains unresolved.
Until a compromise is reached, Tamale Teaching Hospital continues to sit at the center of a conflict that blends healthcare delivery with high-stakes political drama.
