Trending in Nigeria: New Terrorist Group Mahmuda Intensifies Attacks in Kwara and Niger States A newly emerged terrorist group known as Mahmuda has escalated its attacks in several communities within Kwara and Niger States. Suspected members of this group reportedly targeted Ilesha Baruba and Kemaanji in the Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Kwara State on Sunday night, following a prior incident on Friday where they killed several vigilantes. Witnesses reported that assailants, dressed in military camouflage and riding motorcycles, attacked a market square at around 9:30 PM, opening fire on residents before fleeing the scene. The attack resulted in the deaths of four Fulani individuals, a vigilante, and a 19-year-old teenager who was struck by a stray bullet.
A local resident indicated that the attacks appeared to be premeditated, as the assailants aimed directly at the Fulani, shooting them at close range. The vigilante, armed with a dane gun, was perceived as a threat, which likely prompted the attack. This incident follows another attack in Kaiama on the same day, where a vigilante was also killed. The Mahmuda group has been implicated in various violent incidents, including killings and kidnappings in communities such as Kemaanji, Tenebo, Baabete, Nuku, and Nanu in Kaiama, as well as in Babana and Wawa districts of Borgu LGA in Niger State. Despite claims from the federal government of progress in combating terrorism, security and intelligence experts argue that the rise of the Mahmuda group signifies a pressing need to bolster efforts against terrorism. They expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the country’s intelligence system in addressing the growing threat posed by these new militant factions.
