(In South Africa) Student Protests Erupt at Tiyelelani Secondary Over Alleged Rape by Teachers



In Soshanguve, South Africa, Tiyelelani Secondary School has been rocked by student protests over allegations that three teachers sexually assaulted and raped learners. The demonstrations, which began on Monday, September 1, 2025, disrupted teaching and learning, with pupils accusing the school principal of failing to act on reports of the abuse. The protests escalated, involving political parties and civil rights groups, and resulted in property damage and one learner’s injury


In response, the Gauteng Department of Education removed the principal and the three accused teachers from their duties effective Wednesday, September 3, 2025, pending investigations. The department has urged learners to return to class and is working with police and social workers to address the allegations. The South African Human Rights Commission is also monitoring the situation, emphasizing learner safety and exam continuity.
