Cameroon boss slams Ekitike after missing out on France squad

Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike has become the center of a heated international debate after Cameroon coach Marc Brys publicly criticized him. Despite scoring three goals in his first three games for Liverpool, the 23-year-old forward was not included in Didier Deschamps’ latest France squad. Ekitike, who has dual French and Cameroonian nationality, had long made clear his preference to represent France at senior level.

Brys reacted strongly, insisting that Cameroon should not be treated as a fallback option. “I haven’t contacted him. He put all his money into trying to play for France and he didn’t succeed. And now we, Cameroon, are his second choice? I don’t need to be a second choice,” Brys said. He stressed that while Ekitike is talented, the national team needs players with passion and loyalty rather than stars waiting for opportunities.

This public rebuke highlights the tension between African federations and dual-nationality players who choose Europe first. Brys made it clear he wants commitment and heart from those who represent Cameroon. For Ekitike, the rejection may close the door to Cameroon while keeping alive his slim chances of breaking into France’s star-studded forward line in the future.

The criticism from Marc Brys adds further pressure on Hugo Ekitike, who now finds himself in a delicate position at international level. Although he has yet to debut for France, his under-21 appearances mean he has been firmly on the radar of French football. Still, competition for attacking roles is fierce, with the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Olivier Giroud, Randal Kolo Muani, and Marcus Thuram all ahead in the pecking order.

Cameroon, on the other hand, had previously shown interest in convincing Ekitike to commit to their national side. However, Brys’ statement appears to shut down that possibility for now. He emphasized his need for players who bring commitment to the shirt rather than those who see the team as a backup option. The remarks may resonate with supporters frustrated by the perception that some dual-nationality stars overlook their African heritage until Europe turns them away.

Ekitike’s club form remains his best chance to silence critics. A strong run with Liverpool under Arne Slot could reignite his France prospects. For now, however, his international future remains in limbo. As Liverpool prepare for a crucial Premier League clash with Arsenal, all eyes will be on whether Ekitike continues his impressive scoring form.
