The ancient Sumerians (in Mesopotamia) invented the concept of time divided into 60 seconds and 60 minutes.
Around 3000 BCE, the Sumerians used a sexagesimal (base-60) numeral system for mathematics and astronomy. This is why today we have 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, and even 360 degrees in a circle (since 360 is a highly divisible multiple of 60).
Their innovation has lasted for over 5,000 years and still shapes how we measure time and angles today. Isn’t it fascinating how something from so long ago continues to rule our daily lives?
