(In Kenya) Mourners Set Mawego Police Station Ablaze During Albert Ojwang’s Funeral, Protesting His Suspicious Death in Custody

Mawego, a town in Homa Bay County, Kenya, has become a focal point of national attention following a dramatic protest on July 3, 2025, during the funeral procession of Albert Ojwang, a 31-year-old teacher and blogger. Mourners, carrying Ojwang’s coffin, stormed Mawego Police Station—where he was initially detained after his June 7 arrest—and set it ablaze, demanding justice for his death in police custody under suspicious circumstances.

The act was a symbolic outcry against alleged police brutality, as an autopsy revealed signs of assault, contradicting initial police claims of suicide.Ojwang’s death on June 8, 2025, at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, after his transfer from Mawego, has sparked widespread outrage across Kenya. Human rights groups, opposition figures, and citizens have condemned the incident, pointing to a pattern of extrajudicial killings targeting outspoken activists.

The Director of Public Prosecutions approved murder charges against six officers, including Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam, while Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat stepped aside amid public pressure. The protest, led largely by youths and students from Mawego National Polytechnic, saw thousands march to the station, chanting anti-police slogans and barricading the premises before setting it on fire. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported 22 injuries during the unrest. As Ojwang’s burial approaches on July 5, 2025, in Kokwanyo village, the incident has intensified calls for police reform and accountability.
