Germany in talks to buy Patriot missiles for Ukraine after US pause

 

Germany is engaging in high-level talks to secure Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine following a decision by the United States to pause the delivery of 30 Patriot missiles. This delay, caused by dwindling U.S. stockpiles, has triggered concerns in Kyiv about its capacity to defend against intensified Russian airstrikes, including what has been described as the most significant drone assault since the conflict began in 2022. A German government spokesperson confirmed that one of the leading options being explored is purchasing Patriot systems from the U.S. and sending them directly to Ukraine to bypass lengthy production timelines. Germany has already supplied three Patriot batteries from its own military inventory and continues to lead efforts, through the Ramstein group of about 50 nations, to secure more systems for Ukraine. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will travel to Washington this month for discussions with his U.S. counterpart on both this urgent need and long-term production capacity. His initiative reflects growing European concern over America's wavering military support under Donald Trump's influence. Germany has taken a more prominent leadership role in Ukraine aid as a result.

With U.S. support showing signs of strain, Germany is intensifying its efforts to safeguard Ukraine. In response to a fresh wave of Russian drone and missile attacksincluding a record-breaking assault that left 23 civilians injuredGermany is prioritizing the delivery of Patriot systems to bolster Ukrainian air defenses. These systems are crucial in intercepting Russia’s fast-moving ballistic missiles. Germany, already Ukraine's second-largest donor after the U.S., has pledged €38 billion in military aid, including long-term support. This includes the Patriots already sent, and potentially more to come. Officials in Berlin say that Europe could technically support Ukraine’s resistance without the U.S., but doing so would pose enormous logistical and financial challenges. Meanwhile, Germany is reportedly preparing a €25 billion tank order aimed at strengthening NATO brigades. This would not only boost regional security but also signal Germany’s long-term military commitment amid a shifting geopolitical landscape. Germany’s growing defense role marks a significant shift, as it seeks to rally European allies and maintain consistent support for Ukraine in a time of uncertaintyboth on the battlefield and among international partners.
