Elon Musk has intensified his criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s massive tax and spending bill, renewing his call for the formation of a new political party. The 940-page "Big Beautiful Bill" includes sweeping tax cuts and reductions to healthcare and food aid programs. It has drawn criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans concerned about its long-term impact on the national debt and social safety net.
Musk, a former Trump donor and advisor, initially denounced the bill in early June as a “disgusting abomination,” sparking a public rift between the two. Although tensions briefly cooled, with both expressing regret over their harsh words, Musk reignited the feud as the Senate began debating the bill. He sharply criticized lawmakers who supported the bill despite pledging to reduce government spending, warning they would face primary challenges in 2026.
Musk mocked the current political establishment as the "Porky Pig Party" and called for a new movement that prioritizes ordinary citizens over entrenched interests. Trump responded by attacking Musk’s companies, suggesting that the Department of Government Efficiencyonce led by Muskshould investigate the subsidies his firms have received. Trump claimed cutting these would save the government substantial money and implied Musk’s success depended on federal aid.
Musk fired back, declaring he supported eliminating all subsidies, including those that benefit him. Political analysts remain skeptical about Musk’s influence in reshaping American politics. Bill Schneider of George Mason University noted that while Musk is wealthy and influential, building a viable political coalition around opposition to Trump’s bill would be extremely difficult. He highlighted the challenge of uniting fiscal conservatives worried about debt with progressives alarmed by cuts to social programs under one political banner.
