Trump and Canadian Minister Carney in Direct Contact Over Tariffs
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump are engaged in direct communications as part of Ottawa’s efforts to persuade Washington to lift tariffs on steel and aluminum, according to Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly.
Joly explained there are ongoing diplomatic negotiations amid the broader trade war, with reports indicating that Trump and Carney are secretly discussing frameworks for a trade and security agreement. This follows Trump’s recent decision to double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50%, which threatens to impact Canada, the largest foreign supplier of these metals to the U.S.
Canada is preparing potential retaliatory measures if negotiations do not progress favorably. U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra mentioned that negotiations include topics such as U.S. content in vehicles, Canadian access to critical minerals, Arctic cooperation, defense spending, border security, and fighting fentanyl smuggling.
Both governments acknowledge ongoing conversations, though official statements remain cautious. The situation continues to influence North American trade dynamics, with tensions and negotiations ongoing.
