(In US) Zohran Mamdani Defeats Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Primary, Sparks Backlash and Islamophobic Rhetoric

In a surprising political upset, 33-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has emerged as the Democratic Party’s nominee for the New York City mayoral race, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani, who was previously little known outside progressive political circles, secured a strong lead that left many observers stunned.

Cuomo, 67, who had been attempting a political comeback following a sexual misconduct scandal, officially conceded the race. In his concession, he acknowledged Mamdani’s victory, stating that the candidate “deserved the win.” Despite holding a third-party ballot line, Cuomo did not commit to continuing his campaign in the upcoming November election.

The nomination has sparked a wave of reactions across social media. The phrase “RIP NYC” began circulating among some right-wing and MAGA-aligned users, expressing discontent over Mamdani’s progressive stance and identity.

The backlash has also given rise to a surge in Islamophobic commentary, as online discussions turned hostile due to Mamdani’s identity as a Muslim Democrat.
Some critics have used discriminatory language, falsely labeling Mamdani a “terrorist” and questioning his place in New York and America.

These attacks have drawn concern from civil rights advocates, who warn of increasing xenophobic rhetoric in response to rising diversity in American political leadership. Despite the backlash, Mamdani’s supporters have hailed his win as a sign of progress and a shift toward inclusive and representative governance in New York City
