Boniface Kariuki, a hawker who was shot in the head by a rogue police officer during protests against police brutality in Nairobi, has been confirmed brain dead, according to his family. Speaking to the media on Sunday, family spokesperson Emily Wanjira revealed that doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital confirmed that although Boniface’s organs continue to function, his brain activity has ceased.

The family is now awaiting the official declaration of death from the medical team. Wanjira also disclosed that bullet fragments remain lodged in Boniface’s brain, which have not yet been removed. Boniface underwent two surgeries at Kenyatta National Hospital to remove the bullets, and he has been under continuous care in the Intensive Care Unit, receiving round-the-clock medical supervision.

Boniface’s father, Jonah Kariuki, previously shared that the medical expenses had already reached one million Kenyan shillings, and the costs continue to rise as treatment progresses. The family expressed deep sorrow and called on the judicial system to act decisively by convicting and sentencing the police officers responsible for the shooting.
