COSTA TITCH   (Male Artiste of the day)

Costa Titch, born Costa Tsobanoglou in Nelspruit, South Africa, on September 10, 1995, was of Greek and South African heritage. He grew up in a multicultural household, which greatly influenced his sense of identity and creativity. From a young age, Costa showed a keen interest in the performing arts, particularly dance and music. He moved to Johannesburg after finishing school to pursue a career in entertainment. Originally starting as a dancer, he gained recognition in South Africa’s vibrant dance scene, particularly in the hip-hop and street dance communities, where he performed alongside and choreographed for various artists.

Costa Titch transitioned into music in the late 2010s and quickly made a name for himself in the South African hip-hop scene. His unique style blended trap, hip-hop, and elements of Amapiano, and he rapped fluently in both English and isiZulu—a move that widened his appeal across diverse South African audiences. He broke into the mainstream with his energetic performances and distinctive voice. His 2020 debut album, Made in Africa, was a commercial and critical success, cementing his place in the local music industry. The album featured collaborations with top South African artists such as AKA, Riky Rick, and Boity.

Among Costa Titch’s most popular tracks were “Nkalakatha (Remix)” featuring AKA and Riky Rick, “Areyeng” featuring Riky Rick and DJ Maphorisa, and “Thembi.” These songs showcased his lyrical agility, his love for high-energy beats, and his dance-oriented production style. His music videos often emphasized choreography, a nod to his roots in dance. He was also one of the few South African rappers to embrace a strong visual identity, often experimenting with bold fashion choices and stage presence that made him a standout figure in live performances and festivals.

In 2022, Costa Titch reached a major milestone by signing a partnership deal with Senegalese-American singer Akon’s label, Konvict Kulture. This move was seen as a strategic attempt to expand his reach beyond Africa and into global markets. It marked a new era in his career as he released more polished and internationally marketable tracks like “Big Flexa,” which became a viral sensation on platforms like TikTok. Despite this global ambition, Costa remained deeply rooted in South African music and culture, often highlighting local sounds and slang in his lyrics.

Costa Titch’s life took a tragic turn on March 11, 2023, when he collapsed and died while performing at the Ultra South Africa music festival in Johannesburg. The incident, which was captured on video, shocked fans and fellow artists alike. Initially, there was speculation about a seizure possibly triggered by the strobe lights on stage. It was later reported that he had a history of epilepsy, which may have played a role in his untimely death. However, no official autopsy result was widely released to the public. His passing sparked conversations around artists' health and the pressures of high-energy performances.

As of today, Costa Titch is remembered as a trailblazer in the South African music industry. He left behind a relatively short but impactful legacy—one that combined sharp artistry, cultural fusion, and unrelenting work ethic. Though his career was marred by minimal controversy—mostly debates about cultural appropriation due to his white heritage in a predominantly Black music genre—he was largely celebrated for his authentic embrace of South African languages and sounds. Tributes continue to pour in from fans, artists, and collaborators, and his music remains popular, often played in tribute sets and memorial mixes. Costa Titch's legacy is one of unity through music, youthful energy, and the power of cultural crossover.
