Former NFL star and Super Bowl champion Don Hasselbeck has passed away at the age of 70 following a cardiac arrest. The news was confirmed by his son, former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.
Don Hasselbeck was drafted by the New England Patriots in 1977 and played as a tight end in the NFL for nine seasons. His most productive year came in 1981, recording 46 receptions, 808 receiving yards, and six touchdowns.
In 1983, he was traded to the Los Angeles Raiders, where he played a key role in their Super Bowl XVIII victory over Washington, notably blocking an extra point in a 38–9 win. Hasselbeck later played for the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings before retiring. Over his career, he recorded 107 catches, 1,542 yards, and 18 touchdowns in 123 games.
...
Away from football, Hasselbeck was married to his wife Betsy for 50 years and was the father of three sons — Matt and Tim, both former NFL quarterbacks, and Nathanael.
Matt Hasselbeck paid tribute to his father, describing him as not only a husband, father, and coach, but also an artist, mentor, and a man of strong faith whose prayer journals and influence reached far beyond the football field.
Don Hasselbeck’s life left a lasting legacy in his family, his community, and among those he mentored throughout his career.
Rest in peace, Don Hasselbeck.
