Sudan has filed a case against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing the UAE of violating the Genocide Convention by supporting paramilitary forces in Darfur.
The complaint specifically highlights the UAE's alleged support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied Arab militias, which have been involved in intense ethnic-based attacks against the non-Arab Masalit tribe in West Darfur.
Sudan's acting justice minister, Muawia Osman, told the ICJ that the UAE's support for the RSF constitutes "complicity" in the genocide against the Masalit, which the US has also recognized as genocide.
The UAE has dismissed the allegations as a "political game" and a "cynical and baseless PR stunt". Reem Ketait, a top UAE official, claimed that Sudan's action is an attempt to divert attention from the Sudanese Armed Forces' own human rights abuses.
However, UN experts and US lawmakers have found Sudan's accusations against the UAE credible.
Sudan is seeking emergency measures from the ICJ to prevent further genocidal acts against the Masalit, given the lengthy process of resolving cases at the court.
Nonetheless, the filing highlights the ongoing concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Darfur and the role of external actors in the conflict.
The situation remains complex, with multiple parties involved and deep-seated issues driving the violence.
