Rafael Nadal has opened up about the intense physical and emotional challenges he faced after retiring from professional tennis, following the conclusion of his legendary career at the Davis Cup Finals in November 2024.

In the months after his retirement, Nadal endured a steep physical decline. According to fellow tennis great Andy Roddick, the Spanish icon "couldn't walk for a month" due to the cumulative toll of years of injuries. 

His body, worn down from nearly two decades at the top of the sport, forced him into an extended period of rest and recovery.

Beyond the physical pain, Nadal faced deep emotional struggles. 

He admitted to emotionally isolating himself in the wake of retirement, withdrawing from public life and even turning down a planned tribute at the 2024 French Open. “I wasn’t ready,” he said in an interview with the Telegraph. “Back then, I hadn’t made my decision yet.”

Now, however, Nadal has stepped back into the spotlight. On Monday, he received the prestigious Laureus Sporting Icon Award, marking his first major public appearance since leaving the game. 

The recognition comes just weeks ahead of a much-anticipated return to the French Open in Paris, France.

At Roland Garros—the sacred clay battleground where Nadal won 14 Grand Slam titles—he will be honored in a special ceremony on Philippe-Chatrier court during the tournament’s opening day in May 2025. This tribute, long delayed by his personal uncertainty, now represents a moment of closure and celebration.
