(In South Africa) Floyd Shivambu Faces Backlash for Attending Controversial Prophet Bushiri’s Church in Malawi.

Floyd Shivambu, the Secretary General of South Africa’s MK Party, has ignited public controversy after attending an Easter service at the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church in Malawi. The church is led by Shepherd Bushiri, a self-proclaimed prophet whose name has long been tied to legal scandals and controversy.

Shivambu made a noticeable appearance alongside Bushiri during the service. The moment was widely shared online, quickly drawing curiosity and criticism from South Africans who questioned his reasons for associating with a figure still wanted by authorities in South Africa.

Shepherd Bushiri, a Malawian-born preacher, once operated in South Africa where he attracted a massive following. On February 1, 2019, Bushiri and his wife were arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the HAWKS, on charges of fraud, money laundering, and contravention of immigration laws.

The couple was granted bail but later fled to Malawi, defying court orders and sparking a diplomatic standoff.

Since 2015, Bushiri has faced repeated accusations of illegally entering and residing in South Africa, breaking immigration laws several times. Despite his legal troubles, he continues to lead his church in Malawi where he remains an influential but divisive figure.

Floyd Shivambu’s visit to Bushiri’s church has raised serious questions in South Africa.

Citizens and political commentators alike are debating whether this was a personal act of faith or a politically motivated gesture.

The backlash has been swift, with many demanding answers about the implications of a senior political leader publicly aligning himself with a controversial religious figure.

As reactions build, the story highlights the often complex ties between politics, religion, and influence in Southern Africa. Many are now waiting for Shivambu to address the public and clarify his intentions.
