Mahmood Yakubu is trending in Nigeria because the presidency has dismissed claims that he has been replaced as INEC Chairman, labelling the rumours as fake news.
O’tega Ogra, a senior adviser to President Tinubu, urged the public to ignore such misinformation, stating that any legitimate announcement regarding Yakubu’s position would come from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation or another authorised channel.

Mahmood Yakubu is serving his second five-year term as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which began in December 2020.
He was first appointed in November 2015 and reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari after completing his first term.
With his current tenure set to end in December 2025, any changes before then would require official communication from the appropriate government authority.
