Congo Suspends Former President Kabila's Party
The Democratic Republic of Congo has suspended former President Joseph Kabila's political party and ordered the seizure of his assets. The government accuses Kabila's party of supporting Rwandan-backed rebels in the east, specifically the M23 rebels. The interior ministry announced the suspension, while the justice ministry ordered the seizure of Kabila's assets and those of other party leaders, citing acts amounting to high treason.
Kabila, who ruled Congo from 2001 to 2019, has expressed interest in returning to the country to help find a solution to the ongoing conflict. However, the government's move appears to thwart such plans. Kabila's party has denounced the suspension as a "flagrant violation" of the country's constitution and laws. The conflict in eastern Congo has been ongoing for decades, fueled by struggles for control of minerals and spillover from Rwanda's 1994 genocide.
