GTBank announced the system upgrade on its website and social media platforms, informing customers that the process would take place from October 11 to 14. The bank assured users that the upgrade would provide a more efficient and secure banking experience, leveraging cutting-edge technology.
However, as the upgrade commenced, users began reporting issues with the bank's app and website. Transactions failed, accounts were inaccessible, and unexpected credit alerts flooded users' phones. The bank's customer service lines were overwhelmed with complaints, and social media platforms were filled with frustrated customers venting their dissatisfaction.
"I tried to make a transaction, but the app kept crashing," said Lagos-based entrepreneur, Tolani Adebayo. "I received an unexpected credit alert of N50,000, which I didn't request. I'm worried about the security of my account."
"I couldn't access my account for hours," said Abuja-based civil servant, Emmanuel Okoro. "The bank's customer service was unresponsive, and I was left stranded."
In response to the backlash, GTBank apologized for the inconvenience and extended its opening time to 12 pm on October 15 to give customers more time to conduct their transactions. The bank reassured customers that the upgrade is aimed at improving service delivery and enhancing the customer experience.
GTBank's system upgrade is part of a larger trend in Nigeria's banking industry. Other major banks, including Access Bank, Zenith Bank, and Sterling Bank, have undergone similar upgrades in recent months. The Central Bank of Nigeria is reportedly encouraging this move to improve the nation's banking infrastructure.
"System upgrades are necessary for banks to stay competitive and secure," said financial analyst, Dr. Yinka Adewale. "However, GTBank's execution has been poor. The bank should have done more to mitigate disruptions and communicate effectively with customers."
The GTBank system upgrade debacle serves as a reminder of the importance of effective communication, customer-centricity, and thorough testing in technological upgrades. Banks must prioritize user experience and minimize disruptions to maintain trust and loyalty.
