Thousands of residents of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, have been rendered homeless as a result of heavy flooding in various parts of the city. The flood which earlier led to the state government's announcement of a two week closure of schools has intensified, with The Shehu of Borno's Palace being one of the most badly affected locations. The flooding is as a result of the reported leakage of the Alo Dam caused by heavy rainfall, which reached its peak on the morning of Tuesday 10th September 2024. The Alo Dam is a major water reservoir with sources from Lake Chad.
The flood has led to the displacement of residents in several communities such as: Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, Bulabulin, amongst others. The State-owned Broadcasting Station BRTV and Post Office, Shehu Laminu way, and Custom Area, have also been severely affected by the situation. Sweeping through homes with incredible force, the flood has led to the loss of millions of property as many fleeing residents had to leave behind valuable possession. In addition, The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed a total of 41 deaths, with 393 others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
