Senator Dino Melaye has been suspended from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State due to alleged anti-party activities. This decision was made by the party's executive committee in Ayetoro Gbede, Ward 1, after Melaye reportedly refused to honor a summons issued by the committee .
Melaye's suspension is said to be connected to his recent actions, which were deemed detrimental to the PDP's interests and unity . The Ward Chairman, Abayomi Osamika, and Secretary, Yodson Dayo, signed the resolution to suspend Melaye, citing Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution, which empowers the Ward party executives to take disciplinary actions against erring members .
“Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party and his continued membership is no longer tenable.
“Therefore, the Ward party exco hereby suspends Dino Melaye from the Peoples Democratic party, effective and immediately.
“The suspension is in line with provisions of Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution which empowers the Ward party excos to take disciplinary actions against erring members.” The resolution to suspend the Senator noted.
PDP's Reason for Suspension:
1. Senator Dino Melaye failed to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on August 20, 2024.
2. Failure to respond to allegations of misconduct and anti-party activities.
3. Disregard for the party's authority and leadership.
Article 57(4) of PDP Constitution:
1. Empowers the Disciplinary Committee to investigate allegations.
2. Requires members to cooperate with investigations.
Ward Party Exco Resolution:
1. Melaye's actions constitute gross disrespect to the party and leadership.
2. Suspension from party activities.
Potential Next Steps:
1. Melaye may appeal the suspension.
2. Further disciplinary action, potentially leading to expulsion.
3. Impact on Melaye's political career and influence within the PDP.
This isn't the first time the PDP has taken action against members accused of anti-party activities. Other instances include the suspension of Peter Babalola from Osun and former Governor Samuel Ortom from Benue State .
It's worth noting that Melaye's suspension has sparked mixed reactions, with some seeing it as a necessary move to maintain party discipline, while others view it as a targeted attack .
