Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, journalist,TV Host and actor, Onyeka Onwenu, has passed away at the age of 72. The music icon reportedly slumped on the night of Tuesday, 30th July, while giving a performance at the 80th birthday party of Emzor Pharmaceutical Company's CEO, Mrs Stella Okoli. Ms Onwenu was taken to the Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she was later declared dead at the age of 72.

Dubbed the "Elegant Stallion" by the Nigerian press, Ms Onyeka Onwenu was the youngest daughter of Nigerian educationist and politician D. K. Onwenu, who died when she was four years old in an autocrash a week before his appointment as Minister for Education. Originally a secular artist, Onwenu made the transition to gospel music in the 90s, and most of her songs are self-penned. She continued to write and sing about issues such as health (HIV/AIDS), peace and mutual coexistence, respect for women's rights, and the plight of children. Ms Onwenu notably kept her personal life private and often refused to disclose private information regarding her ex-husband, a Yoruba Muslim. She was the mother of two children - Tijani Charles and Abraham.
