TikToker Imprisoned for Insulting Angola's President

An Angolan TikToker and social media influencer identified as Ana da Silva Miguel Popularly known as Neth Nahara, has been handed a two year prison sentence for insulting Angola's president on TikTok. The TikToker accused president João Lourenço of "anarchy and disorganization", she also blamed the president for the lack of schools, housing and employment in her country. Neth Nahara, was initially sentenced by a court to six months in August. However an appeals court ruled that the sentence was too lenient and raised it to two years. The two year ruling is a final one for the TikToker as appeals to the Supreme Court are only permissible for a prison sentence longer than two years.

The appeal court in Luanda ruled that Neth Nahara had used offensive words against the president. The court also stated that her words had the ability to influence public opinion as a result of her popularity. Neth Nahara has more than 230,000 followers on TikTok and her videos attract thousands of views. She had pled for leniency on the grounds that she was a first-time offender, a mother of young children, and regretted her remarks. But the court dismissed her plea, and went further to order her to pay President Lourenço $1,200 (£1,000) for the "damage" caused to his reputation. Neth Nahara's lawyer told media outlets that this was the first time a person had been convicted in Angola for something they had posted on TikTok.
