NACA Threatens to Seek Legal Redress on Doctor Who Spread False HIV Statistics

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has responded to a Tweet posted by a supposed medical practitioner with the username @First Doctor, claiming that 119 of 197 people tested positive to HIV tests conducted by the Red Cross in Abuja. While urging people to practise safe sex, the doctor also claimed in his tweet that 60% of those who tested positive to the virus were male.

Reacting to  First Doctor's Tweet, NACA asked the doctor to confirm when and where this alleged Red Cross outreach occurred and how the 60% prevalent rate was decided upon. The doctor failed to provide answers to these questions posed by NACA, he instead, deleted his tweet. In a statement releaed on 30th July 2023, the agency labelled the tweet posted by the doctor false while stating that it was impossible for Nigeria to have a prevalence HIV rate of 60% let alone one city within the country. While asserting that no HIV outreach of any kind took place in Abuja, the National Agency for Control of AIDS warned that the false information shared by the tweeter user @First Doctor, had been forwarded to the appropriate authorities on misinformation for appropriate actions.
