Tragedy struck in the early afternoon of Wednesday, 28 September 2022, when a tanker with a full load of petrol lost control due to brake failure, rammed into other vehicles and exploded on a bridge at Maboro River, in Akanpa Local Government Area of Kogi state. Reports indicate that no less than 20 people died in the explosion.
The FRSC sector commander for Kogi state, Stephen Dawulung, confirmed the tragic accident but also stated that the exact degree of casualty was yet to be determined. The commander further revealed that an unknown number of community locals were trapped in the river when the explosion occurred.

Residents of Akanpa Local Government Area have described the unfortunate incident as horrible and one of the goriest scenes ever witnessed in the community's history. Eyewitness reports state that "many were crushed to death and had their body parts scattered all over the place, parts had to be picked in bits and pieces in body bags”.
