Ram Fights in Nigeria : Yay or Nay?

During Islamic festivities like the ongoing Eid al-Adha being celebrated by Muslims all over the world, it is not unusual to see various forms of ram fights going on in different parts of Nigeria. Supporters and enthusiasts of ram fighting say it's one of the interesting experience and highlights of the festive season.

However, while supporters of the animal sport find it fascinating and even monetarily rewarding because bets are placed on these animals by owners and enthusiasts, critics have deemed this game a form of animal cruelty. Many Muslim faithfuls have deemed this practice of ram fighting haram. They argue that wounded or previously bloodied rams cannot be used as Eid sacrifice. Muslim faithfuls insist that those who engage in this animal cruelty for fun or monetary rewards will be severely punished by Allah.

The Nigerian ram fighting rule states that at the start of the tournament, rams are allowed to hit 30 blows or horn locks before the referees deem it a tie. Supporters of ram fighting have claimed to have witnessed as high a bet of one million naira (1,000,000) on a particular ram during the tournament.

Eid-Al-Adha Mubarak to all Muslim faithfuls. May the blessings of the season remain with you eternally. Have a joyous celebration.
