On Tuesday, 19 July, 2022, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) announced the withdrawal of the accreditation license of the Abia state polytechnic, Aba. This withdrawal was as a result of the state government's failure to pay staff salaries and allowance in more than 30 months. Spokesperson for the board, Fatima Abubakar, said the board took the decision when it realised the management of the polytechnic showed no signs of commitment towards offsetting the accumulated debt.
The Board informed reporters that the withdrawal of the institution's accreditation license was the last resort as every other measure taken to ensure the state government's compliance had failed. Letters written to the Executive Governor of Abia state, His Excellency, Okezie Ikpeazu informing him of the board's intention yielded no response.

The NBTE also took a step further by sternly warning directors of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to refrain from mobilising any alumni of the Abia state polytechnic for the compulsory one year national service. The board assured directors of the Corps that notification shall be given to them once matters are resolved and the accreditation license of the polytechnic restored.
