Olusegun Obasanjo's Farm Burnt To Ashes

President Olusegun Obasanjo's 2,420 hectares of farmland at Hawe in Aliade, Gwer East Local Government of Benue State was over the weekend razed by fire.

This was revealed in a press briefing by the former president Olusegun Obasanjo's aide on media, Kehinde Akinyemi.

Kehinde Akinyemi revealed that the local authorities have been alerted including the security operatives who he said have initiated investigation into the cause of the fire incident on the mango plantation.

Reacting to the development, Chairman of the Gwer LGA, Emmanuel Otserga, stated that the news of the fire incident got to him at 2pm on Saturday, January 30th. He alleged that the probable cause of the burning of the farm was a disagreement among indigenes of the Gwer LGA over unpaid compensation on the piece of land which was originally that of the state's government.

"We received a report that the Obasanjo mango farm located at Howe was on fire and I quickly informed all the stakeholders, including traditional rulers and we swiftly moved there even the Fire Service also came but by the time we will put out the fire, over half of the farm was already razed.

“However, from the look of things, the fire was caused by the deliberate act of mischief makers, because the way that farm is safeguarded, there is no way fire can cross over from any quarter into the farm.”
