The return of European football has brought surprises as English clubs submitted their squads for the new season. Arsenal have included 15 year old Max Dowman in their 23 man list, making him eligible to become the youngest player in Champions League history if he makes an appearance before his 16th birthday. The teenager has already featured in the Premier League and is joined by all of Arsenal’s summer signings, including Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres. However, injured striker Gabriel Jesus misses out.
Liverpool’s list sparked attention as high profile forward Federico Chiesa was left out of Arne Slot’s 22 man squad. Still, new arrivals Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili were all selected. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has omitted striker Facundo Buonanotte despite his move from Brighton on loan, while Tottenham have left out £30m signing Mathys Tel. Other injured Spurs stars including James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are also missing, though Randal Kolo Muani and Xavi Simons make the cut. Newcastle reshaped their squad after selling Isak to Liverpool, bringing in Aaron Ramsdale, Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade to reinforce their group for the competition.

Elsewhere, Manchester City’s squad features deadline day signing Gianluigi Donnarumma, who joins as one of four goalkeepers. Rayan Cherki has been picked despite an injury that may sideline him for two months, with other additions such as James Trafford and Tijjani Reijnders also named. In the Europa League, Nottingham Forest have left out record buy Omari Hutchinson along with summer arrivals Oleksandr Zinchenko and Angus Gunn. Forwards Jota Silva and Taiwo Awoniyi, both linked with exits, have also not been included.
Aston Villa’s big omission is Ross Barkley from their 21 man list, though Emiliano Martinez remains after failing to secure a transfer. New signings Victor Lindelof, Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho are included. Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi features in their Conference League squad after his deadline day move to Liverpool collapsed.
UEFA’s rules mean each club can only name 25 players on list A, with eight reserved for homegrown talent. Younger players under 21 can be added later on list B if they have been with the club long enough. This leaves some flexibility, but the exclusions of big names like Chiesa, Jesus, Buonanotte, Tel and Barkley show how competitive squad selection can be at Europe’s top level.
