WHICH COUNTRY PRODUCES THE MOST LETTUCE WORLDWIDE

China

China is the undisputed leader in global lettuce production, contributing more than half of the world’s supply. Its dominance comes from a mix of huge agricultural land, favorable growing conditions, and a massive domestic demand for fresh vegetables. Beyond feeding its population, China also exports significant amounts of lettuce, making it both a consumer and a supplier to the global market.

United States

The U.S. ranks second in lettuce production, with California and Arizona serving as the primary hubs. California’s Salinas Valley is often nicknamed the "Salad Bowl of the World" because of its year-round output. American production is highly mechanized, with a focus on romaine and iceberg lettuce, which are staples in salads, fast food, and packaged goods across the country and beyond.

India

India has emerged as a growing lettuce producer, though not yet at the level of China or the U.S. With an expanding middle class and increasing awareness of Western-style salads and healthy diets, lettuce cultivation has gained momentum in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Much of the production is for domestic consumption rather than export, as demand keeps climbing within the country.

Spain

Spain is Europe’s lettuce powerhouse, particularly in the Murcia region, which has the ideal Mediterranean climate for leafy greens. It not only grows enough to meet domestic needs but is also the main exporter of lettuce to other European countries, especially during the winter months when colder regions cannot farm it. Spain’s well-established export networks make it a key player in the global lettuce trade.
