US lawmakers have published a “birthday book” once owned by Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender. The scrapbook was gifted to Epstein in 2003 for his 50th birthday by Ghislaine Maxwell, who was later convicted of trafficking girls for sex. The book contains personal notes from figures across politics, business, and entertainment. Among them is a message allegedly written by Donald Trump, Epstein’s former friend. The note appears in the form of a playful conversation between Trump and Epstein, ending with “Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret.” Democrats released an image of the page, sparking controversy. The White House has strongly denied the letter’s authenticity, insisting the president neither wrote nor signed it. Trump himself has previously called the document “fake” and is suing the Wall Street Journal for reporting on it.

The publication comes after Epstein’s estate was compelled by a subpoena to hand over documents, including his will and contact lists, to the House Oversight Committee. These new releases increase scrutiny on Epstein’s ties to powerful figures such as Bill Clinton, Lord Peter Mandelson, and Prince Andrew, all of whom appear in the scrapbook or other materials.
The release of Epstein’s “birthday book” has intensified political debate in Washington. Democrats claim the alleged Trump note proves the president misled the public when he denied such a message existed. Congressman Robert Garcia accused Trump of lying and attempting to cover up his connection to Epstein. Republicans on the committee, however, argue Democrats are cherry-picking documents to politicize the investigation. Committee chair James Comer emphasized that the focus remains on transparency and accountability for Epstein’s victims.
The scrapbook’s content has also reignited discussion of other high-profile names linked to Epstein. A message attributed to former President Bill Clinton describes Epstein’s “childlike curiosity,” though Clinton has maintained he knew nothing of Epstein’s crimes. Lord Mandelson is also quoted but has expressed regret for ever being introduced to Epstein. Prince Andrew is briefly referenced, with a note from an unnamed woman claiming she met him through Epstein.
Alongside the scrapbook, lawmakers released additional documents including Epstein’s 2007 non-prosecution agreement and decades of entries in his personal address book. Epstein was indicted in 2006 and died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial. His victims continue to call for the full release of Epstein’s files to expose the extent of his network.
